his route begins in thick bamboo forest and will take a full day’s trek and overnight before Mt. Kenya’s peaks gloriously appear on the horizon. An ideal trek for you– with the true adventurous heart!
Day 1- After breakfast at your hotel, we can transfer to Gathiuru Forest Station, the starting point for our trek. From here we can begin hiking through the Bamboo forest. We have a 6- 8 hour trek before we arrive at our camp for the night; Machengini camp at 2900m. Our tented campsite is sunk into a thick forest of Bamboo tree species, named Arudinalio Alpina. For the first two days of our trek, ‘pangas’ (machetes) will be necessary as we are crossing through such dense woodland.
Day 2- This morning, we can continue our hike which will take us past the Alpine zone of the mountain and to the far end of the main forest. We can stop for a picnic lunch on the way to arrive at our Highland Castle camp for the night, at an altitude of 3800m, before dinner.
Day 3- After an early breakfast, our climb will continue to Mackinder’s camp where we will arrive in time for lunch, after a 4- 5 hour hike. From Mackinder’s camp we may connect with other climbers also heading to point Lenana. We can have dinner and stay the night at Mackinder’s camp.
Day 4- We have a very early start this morning at around 4am, waking for a hot drink and breakfast before heading off on our trek to the Austrian Hut at 4790m, via a steep screed (hard, permanent snow bank). After hot drinks and snacks at this hut we can begin our final ascent via the Lewis Glacier, to point Lenana, at 4895m, the highest point of Mt. Kenya accessible on foot. After photos of the spectacular views here, we can begin to descend through the Northern side of the mountain to arrive at Minto’s Hut, at 4200m in time for a hot lunch and well- deserved rest this afternoon.
Day 5- After breakfast this morning, we can continue down the Chogoria route passing the Gorge valley along Lake Michaelson to arrive at Carpot camp, now at at 3300m. We have time for a walk to the nearby Nithi Waterfall after lunch, before making our final descent to Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas for the night.
Day 6- After breakfast we have our final ascent to Chogoria park gate where our vehicle will be waiting to transfer us back to your Nanyuki hotel for a hot shower, or directly onto Nairobi if you prefer. Leaving the following day, we can arrange a safari to the isolated lion territory of Samburu National Park or there are several day trip excursions available from Nanyuki, including the Freedom Fighter’s Mau Mau caves back in the indigenous forest and a camel safari in the nearby Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
Please Note; It is possible to condense this route into a 5 day trek, though it is steep and will require a high level of fitness to successfully complete this trek inside of 5 days.
