At PoinT Lenana

Day 1- Transfer from Nairobi to Nanyuki and settle into your hotel. You can take a complementary walking tour to the Equator  to help you acclimatize for your trek tomorrow. Overnight at a Nanyki Hotel booked on bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2- Drive to Sirimon Park gate (2600m.) and begin the hike after Park formalities through the magical Baboo forest, the tropical rain forest home to the Pencil Cedar and Giant Heather trees, to arrive at Old Moses Camp (3300m.) where you  spend the night. You have about a 3-4 hour hike over a leisurely 9kms today. From Camp Moses you will be able to see the two peaks of the Batian and Nelion summits.

Day 3- Today we  trek through the moorland to the stunning Liki and Mackinder’s valleys where we will have a spectacular view of Sendeo and Tereri Peaks and also a view of Nanyuki town below. It is a 6-8 hour hike over 13 kms to Shipton's camp (4200m.)  which is in a beautiful setting, the north facing the Nelion and Batian peaks. Dinner and overnight stay at shiptons. Cold lunch is served en-route.

Day 4- You  wake at 3am for a hot drink  before we begin our final trek to point Lenana (4985m.) summit in time for the sunrise!! After taking photos, you descend to Mintos camp for your full breakfast. From here, a distance of 300m you will be able to see the Gorges Valley, the Hall Tarns and also  Lake Elies at a distance. After a short rest,  continue with the hike through the Gorges Valley with Lake Michaelson and Vivienne Falls on either side of us. We will also see the Giant Flat which is the top of Kilingo hill table on our 18 km hike to Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas (3080m.) for the night.

Day 5- Today you have a final hike of 3-4 hours through thick bamboo forest with an idyllic chance of spotting white and Black Columbus Monkeys and other mountain forest wildlife. When we arrive at Chogoria park gate our vehicle will be waiting for us to transfer to Nairobi where the tour ends!


 

This route has a gentle culmination to the peak, and will take you through sweeping valleys and into stunning scenery. Narumoro route can also be combined with any other descent if you wish to see another side of this majestic mountain.

 

Day 1- Transfer from Nairobi to the stunning slopes of mount Kenya. You will cross the equator and arrive at your hotel for lunch. You can lavish in the spectacular scenery of Mount Kenya, take a tour with your guide to the equator or opt for a walking safari.

 

Day 2- After an early breakfast, and a usually perfect photo op of Mt. Kenya in her morning glory, you will transfer to Narumoro Park gate to begin your hike. Today you will be acclimatizing to steep altitude of 10,000 feet at the Meteorological Station where you will spend the night after a 3- 4 hour hike.

 

Day 3- Today you will hike up through the beautiful Teleki Valley to Mackinder's Camp at 14,000 feet. Prepare to be breathless by the majestic view of Mount Kenya's peaks on your 4-5 hour climb.

Day 4- A pre- dawn climb to point Lenana to reach the summit of Mount Kenya in time for a magnificent sunrise and spectacular scenery viewing! You made it to the top of Africa's second highest mountain!! Then you can descend back to Mackinder's Camp for breakfast before continuing back down to the Meteorological Station Lodge for your last overnight on the mountain.

 

Day 5- This morning you will return to the park gate at the base of the mountain, where you can choose to stay and explore around Mount Kenya on magical day trips or transfer onto any other destination of your choice. If you want to head back to Nairobi, you can add on the option of going out for a meal of African game meat tonight at the Carnivore Restaurant (for an added fee).

This route begins with a lush bamboo forest trek and has a steep climb from the base of the mountain, culminating to a challenging ascent to the peak. You have a gentle descent through stunning valleys sweeping into moorlands. Although this climb can be done in 4 days, an extra day will take you on a peak circuit route for acclimatisation, and is advisable to ensure a pleasant and successful climb.


 

Day 1- Depart Nairobi for Naromoru town in the slopes of Mt. Kenya to arrive for lunch. You can take a safari to the Equator this afternoon, or a trip out to Mountain Rock Hotel for a pleasant afternoon.

 

Day 2- After breakfast, we can drive to the Naro-Moru park gate where we can begin our 10km trek to the Met Station at 3090m, to arrive before dinner and spend the night at the camp.

 

Day 3- This morning we can continue our hike heading to Mackinder’s Camp at 4300m to arrive before, stopping for lunch on the way.

 

Day 4- After a very early breakfast, we can follow the trek which leads via a steep screed to the Austrian Hut, at an altitude of 4790m. Here we can have a short break with hot drinks and biscuits before we continue our ascent to point Lenana at 4985m, via the Lewis Glacier. After taking in the sweeping views from this point, we can then begin to descend through the Northern side to Minto’s Hut at 4200m, where we can stop for a rest. After lunch, we can continue our descent on the Chogoria route, passing the Gorge valley and Lake Michaelson to arrive at Carpot camp at 3300m, in time to set up camp before dinner.

 

Day 5- After breakfast, we can leave our Carpot camp to continue our climb to the Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas, where we can stop for a picnic lunch before continuing to the park gate, where our vehicle will be waiting for us. It is also possible to arrange vehicle transport to collect us from the Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas if preferred.


 

This is a rugged route with mostly camping accommodation. Mostly used by the Kenyan Armed Forces during training this could be an ideal trek for a wilderness mountain adventurer, abseiling into splendid scenery.

 

Day 1- Transfer from Nairobi to Nanyuki town, nestled in the slopes of Mt. Kenya. You can take a walking safari to the Equator this afternoon or a nature hike to the Mau Mau Caves if we arrive in good time, if you like.

 

Day 2- After breakfast at your hotel, we will transfer to the base of Mt. Kenya trail where we can begin our hike to the first Marania camp which is at an altitude of 3300m. We will arrive here before dinner and can spend the night here.

Day 4- Today we can continue our climb which will take us past the Terere and Sendeo peaks at an altitude of 4600m, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. From the peaks, we will begin to drop down towards Shipton's camp, where we will arrive in time for dinner and spend the night here.

 

Day 5- Our climb today will take us past two tarns before we stop at Tarn Hut for lunch on the way. From here we can continue to cross two screeds up to a height of 4600m, before heading back down towards Mackinder's camp, at an altitude of 4300m in Teleki Valley where we will arrive before dinner and spend the night.

 

Day 6- We will wake around 3am for a hot drink and early breakfast before the track leads to anther steep screed before the next Austrian hut, at 4790m for a short break and again hot drinks and snacks. From here we can continue on our final ascent to point Lenana at 4895m via the Lewis Glacier. Once we have celebrated our conquest of this beauteous mountain, we can descend the Northern side of the mountain to arrive at Mintos camp ,at 4200m. After lunch here, we can continue our descent on the Chogoria route which will take us through the Gorge Valley and along Lake Michealson, before we arrive at our Carpot camp for the night, at an altitude of 3300m.

 

Day 7- This morning we will continue the final leg of our descent to the Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas where our vehicle will be waiting for us, to transfer you onto your Nanyuki hotel for a hot shower, or directly onto Nairobi if you prefer. From Nanyuki we can arrange a safari to nearby Samburu National Park for a few days or you could take a day trip to Sweet Waters Chimpanzee Sanctuary tomorrow.

his route begins in thick bamboo forest and will take a full day's trek and overnight before Mt. Kenya's peaks gloriously appear on the horizon. An ideal trek for you-- with the true adventurous heart!

 

Day 1- After breakfast at your hotel, we can transfer to Gathiuru Forest Station, the starting point for our trek. From here we can begin hiking through the Bamboo forest. We have a 6- 8 hour trek before we arrive at our camp for the night; Machengini camp at 2900m. Our tented campsite is sunk into a thick forest of Bamboo tree species, named Arudinalio Alpina. For the first two days of our trek, 'pangas' (machetes) will be necessary as we are crossing through such dense woodland.

 

Day 2- This morning, we can continue our hike which will take us past the Alpine zone of the mountain and to the far end of the main forest. We can stop for a picnic lunch on the way to arrive at our Highland Castle camp for the night, at an altitude of 3800m, before dinner.

 

Day 3- After an early breakfast, our climb will continue to Mackinder’s camp where we will arrive in time for lunch, after a 4- 5 hour hike. From Mackinder's camp we may connect with other climbers also heading to point Lenana. We can have dinner and stay the night at Mackinder’s camp.

 

Day 4- We have a very early start this morning at around 4am, waking for a hot drink and breakfast before heading off on our trek to the Austrian Hut at 4790m, via a steep screed (hard, permanent snow bank). After hot drinks and snacks at this hut we can begin our final ascent via the Lewis Glacier, to point Lenana, at 4895m, the highest point of Mt. Kenya accessible on foot. After photos of the spectacular views here, we can begin to descend through the Northern side of the mountain to arrive at Minto’s Hut, at 4200m in time for a hot lunch and well- deserved rest this afternoon.

 

Day 5- After breakfast this morning, we can continue down the Chogoria route passing the Gorge valley along Lake Michaelson to arrive at Carpot camp, now at at 3300m. We have time for a walk to the nearby Nithi Waterfall after lunch, before making our final descent to Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas for the night.

 

Day 6- After breakfast we have our final ascent to Chogoria park gate where our vehicle will be waiting to transfer us back to your Nanyuki hotel for a hot shower, or directly onto Nairobi if you prefer. Leaving the following day, we can arrange a safari to the isolated lion territory of Samburu National Park or there are several day trip excursions available from Nanyuki, including the Freedom Fighter's Mau Mau caves back in the indigenous forest and a camel safari in the nearby Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

Please Note; It is possible to condense this route into a 5 day trek, though it is steep and will require a high level of fitness to successfully complete this trek inside of 5 days.

Rock Climbing on Mount KenyaOur specialist alpine guide is one of Kenya's most elite climbers; a KWS Rescue Guide, he has led many rescue team in this mountain, and often takes film crews to these spectacular heights. The season for rock climbing is the driest months of the year between December and March, and even inexperienced adventurers with a lust for heights and sights can take to the thrilling crown of Mount Kenya.

 

An experienced climber can expect to reach the tip and return to the base in one day, however in case an overnight is required, our alpine guide fee will cover any in-eventualities, whether 1 or 2 days is required.

 

Technical climbing on Mount Kenya

Nelion via Batian Route:

Day Trip- Access through Narumoro route of Mt. Kenya, from the base camp of the Austrian hut. We will wake at 5am to leave at 5:45am, so by around 6:30am, we will enter the base where the rock climbing will begin. We have approximately a 6 hour climb before we reach the summit of Nelion at a height of 5188m. From here we can cross over to the Batian peak, Mt. Kenya's highest point at 5199m, in about 1 hour. Returning to Nelion summit will again take 1 hour, and descending back to the Austrian hut should take us about 4 hours.

 

North Face Route:

Day Trip- Access through Sirimon route of Mt. Kenya, from Shipton's camp. For this climb we leave Shipton's camp to the base of the North Face. Waking after 4am, we will have left by 5am for the Batian peak, about an 8 hour climb away, (depending on experience). A climber with no previous experience can expect to arrive at the peak around 3pm. From here we can either descend halfway to the amphitheatre base, for camping overnight on the rocks, or if time allows, we will have returned to Shipton's camp in time for dinner.

 

NB: If you do not have your own climbing equipment, please advise us and we will happily arrange gear hire for you including; helmet/ harness/ four locking binar= figure eight abseiling devise.
